Six Years In. More Determined Than Ever.

Updated: 3 days ago

This Week, Impruvon Turns Six!

Thanks to our team, I have been moved to really think about what 6 years of Impruvon means. My first thought is it doesn’t feel like six years—we’ve had so much fun, overcome so many obstacles, learned more than I thought was possible, and have supported so many people.

I started Impruvon because of my brother. I lost my brother and best friend Ben on April 3, 2019, and started Impruvon on May 20, 2020. It was the only thing I could think about for the following year so thanks to my incredible boss at the time, Mike Mazzocco, I was encouraged to start Impruvon. One of the many people who have made this 6 years possible.

7 years since losing Ben, 6 since starting Impruvon. These last 6 years have been crazy in a good way, and I think we have done a lot that Ben would be proud of. That makes me proud of the last 6 years.

With that said, somehow, with all the craziness and time that's passed, it still feels like we’re just getting started.

This is about reflecting on where we’ve been, what we’ve built, and—most importantly—why none of it would mean anything if it wasn't for two key groups of people: vulnerable individuals such as those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and the teams who show up for them every single day.

We Started Because the System Was Failing People

When we started Impruvon the problem we set out to solve seemed so simple: help manage medications for vulnerable populations.

Well, we were definitely wrong theremedication management is complicated!

From order management, to pharmacy communications, to medication drop-off, to medication review, medication administration, medication documentation, controlled counts, PRN effectiveness tracking, audit and reporting – the list goes on!

To further the complexity, Home & Community Based Service (HCBS) providers we intended to support, and now do support, have to figure out how to do all of that for on average 10-15 high-risk, high cost, and high impact medications per day for 3-6 people in community-based homes just like most people live in, not clinically outfitted hospitals or care centers.

The people who are doing the jobs are not clinical professionals like nurses, they are Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who are responsible for everything from managing medications, to cooking meals, supporting independence and life skills. While managing everything else, that non-clinically trained DSP is required to follow on average 39 disconnected, manual steps to administer medications to align with regulatory requirements. And the tools available to help them are file cabinets, lockboxes, paper guides, and of course, the infamous 3 ring binder.

Over the last 6 years, 1 theme sticks out:

DSPs are the backbone of our industry, they are incredibly dedicated people, but don't have the tools to make success at their jobs achievable.

Since starting Impruvon, we’ve talked to thousands of People Supported, Loved Ones / Guardians, DSPs, Nurses, Pharmacists, State Directors and other stakeholders in our industry. And in these last 6 years, we have learned everything we know from the ecosystem. We listened and understood there was a major problem.

This is Impruvon’s super power, still to this day. We are relentlessly curious, we ask questions, we listen, and we use our expertise and technology to solve this industry’s biggest problems.

What Six Years of Work Looks Like

We built Impruvon to replace the impossible with the achievable. Those 39 manual  medication administration steps are now down to 11—each one reminded, guided, documented in a regulatory compliant fashion.

Our platform—combining eMAR software (eMAR+) with a Smart Medication Storage & Access (MedBox) solution—integrates directly with pharmacies, EHRs, and a multitude of other technologies part of the HCBS ecosystem. We don’t ask organizations to tear down what they’ve built; we fit right in, connect, and improve quality.

The results speak for themselves:

48%

Reduction in

Medication Errors

1.2 hrs

Saved Per Shift

69%

Increased Clinical Documentation

100%

Compliance Benchmarks Achieved

Behind every one of these numbers are people.

  • A resident who received the right medication at the right time.

  • A DSP who finished a shift without the sinking feeling that something got missed or they're going to get in trouble.

  • An Executive Director who walked into an audit with confidence instead of dread.

  • A Sales or Customer Success team member at Impruvon who interviewed multiple customers to understand what they thought their problem should be solved.

  • An engineer at Impruvon who dug in, built it, tested it and truly put their heart into the feature.

  • And my Executive Team, the best of the best, who oversee everything to get that capability into someone’s hands, ensure they knew how to use it, followed up to make sure it was working, and made sure we went the extra mile to fix it if it wasn't.

Nothing Impruvon has done, is doing, or will do would be possible without the people on this list above.

Compliance Should Be Like Breathing

A provider with whom we are kicking off recently said something that I keep thinking about:

“Impruvon makes compliance feel like breathing. That's how it should be, you shouldn’t have to think about it.”

This was as exciting for me as the biggest contracts we’ve signed. We have put everything we have into Impruvon and it's amazing when someone sees it and instantly gets it.

This is what Impruvon strives for: compliance embedded into the workflow. When it happens automatically, consistently, and without friction, teams stop chasing paperwork or process and get back to the real work: focusing on people.. Leaders stop reacting to problems and start proactively preventing them. Organizations stop surviving audits and start excelling at care. Most importantly, people live better lives.

Six years in, that vision is no longer aspirational. It’s operational. And we’re just getting started.

Year Seven and Beyond

While anniversaries are moments to look back, at Impruvon we spend most of our time looking forward.

There are still too many providers operating on paper systems. Too many DSPs navigating workflows that set them up to struggle. Too many residents whose safety depends on manual processes that introduce preventable risk. Our work is far from over.

In Year Seven, we are more connected, more capable, and just as committed as we were on Day 1. We are excited to kick off new engagements that enable us to provide our platform to more people who need it. We will keep building the right solutions for people who need them most. We will keep listening to providers and refining the tools that support frontline staff. We will keep showing up for the individuals whose lives depend on this work being done right.

To the People Who Make This Real

Sometimes Impruvon does not feel real. We support providers in over 30 states, integrate with hundreds of pharmacies, manage tens of millions of medications, support federal and state-wide engagements and get to work with some of my favorite people I’ve ever met who make it all possible day in and day out.

Thank you.

To our team: You are the reason Impruvon is what it is. You’ve carried our mission and dedication through long nights, hard conversations, and achieved moments of extraordinary success. You didn’t just sell, build, or support technology. We built something that helps tens of thousands of people daily. I am proud of us.

To our provider, pharmacy, and technology partners: Thank you for trusting us with the most critical parts of your operations—and more importantly, to work as hard as you do for the people we all support. Your feedback has shaped everything we’ve built. Your collaboration to drive change in systems that weren’t working has made your organizations stronger and your residents safer.

To the direct support professionals: This industry asks everything of you and doesn’t always give enough back. We built Impruvon for you—to give you the tools and the support that matches the scale of what you do. We will never let you down.

The future of I/DD care deserves better systems. Impruvon will continue providing them.

Happy 6th Anniversary to every person who has been part of this journey and made this “idea” a reality.
